Flu Vaccinations at The Madison Physicians: What to Expect

Flu vaccines are designed to protect against the main flu viruses that research and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) suggest will be the most common during the upcoming season. Three kinds of flu viruses commonly circulate among people today: influenza A (H1N1) viruses, influenza A (H3N2) viruses, and influenza B viruses.

Our 2022-2023 high dose influenza quadrivalent, preservative free, vaccine, recommended only for patients age 65 and over, is made to protect against the following four viruses:

  • an A/Victoria/2570/2019(H1N1) pdm09-like virus;
  • an A/Darwin/9/2021 (H3N2)-like virus;
  • a B/Austria/1359417/2021-like virus (B/Victoria lineage); and
  • a B/Phuket/3073/2013-like virus (B/Yamagata lineage).

The high dose vaccine contains four times the amount of antigen (the part of the vaccine that prompts the body to make antibody) contained in regular flu shots. The additional antigen is intended to create a stronger immune response (more antibody) in the person getting the vaccine.

Our 2022-2023 Flublok quadrivalent, preservative free, egg free (recombinant protein based) vaccine, now recommended for all patients age 18 including those age 65 and over, is made to protect against the following four viruses:

  • an A/Wisconsin/588/2019 (H1N1) pdm09-like virus;
  • an A/Darwin/6/2021 (H3N2)-like virus;
  • a B/Austria/1359417/2021-like virus (B/Victoria lineage); and
  • a B/Phuket/3073/2013-like virus (B/Yamagata lineage).

The Flublok vaccine contains three times the amount of antigen (the part of the vaccine that prompts the body to make antibody) contained in regular flu shots. The additional antigen is intended to create a stronger immune response (more antibody) in the person getting the vaccine.

Our 2022-2023 Fluzone vaccine for those patients under age 65, including pregnant patients, is a quadrivalent, preservative free, vaccine, made to protect against:

  • an A/Victoria/2570/2019 (H1N1) pdm09-like virus;
  • an A/Darwin/9/2021 (H3N2)-like virus;
  • a B/Austria/1359417/2021-like virus (B/Victoria lineage); and
  • a B/Phuket/3073/2013-like virus (B/Yamagata lineage).
